a little trip (part 1)…

a little trip (part 1)…

The last week of May, my husband and I were blessed to have been able to go on a little trip.  Just the 2 of us.  In the 20 years (Oct.3rd), that we have been married, we have never taken a trip with just the two of us.  We have always had the kids with us.  Our youngest two have never even stayed away with others, without one of us always being their with them.  So when this opportunity arrived, we took it and said this would be our anniversary trip.  It was also the first time that I had ever flown.  I have always been afraid of heights, but I truly loved flying in a plane and look forward to doing it again.   We were blessed to have been able to take a trip west to Golden, CO.  This is a beautiful little town at the foot of the Rockies.  We stayed in a beautiful hotel called The Golden Hotel.  The view from the room was amazing.  I couldn’t wait to get to exploring around the area. One of the first places we went was to the Buffalo Bill’s Museum and Grave.  I love history, especially that of the Old West.  So to be able to go see where Buffalo Bill and his family were buried and to see a place dedicated to his life, was awesome!

Once we left Buffalo Bill’s Museum, we just rode around looking at the different views.  It is so amazing how the Rocky mountains are so different than the Appalachian Mountains. We rode to the Red Rocks Amphitheater.   While we didn’t get to go into the amphitheater seating area (they were having a graduation), we did get to see the visitor center and walk around the outside of it.  It is gorgeous there!  I would LOVE to go back and walk the trails around the area, as well as see a concert in the amphitheater.  The pictures I took with my phone does not do this place any justice.

Another cool place that my husband and I went to was The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.  It is one of the largest urban refuges in the United States.  It has over 330 different species of mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and amphibians.  The story about how this refuge came about is truly amazing.  The U.S. Army had built this area as a chemical weapons manufacturing facility after japan bombed Pearl Harbor, to support the war effort.  After the war was over, the land was then leased to the Shell Chemical Company for agricultural chemicals. Then the Arsenal was then used for Cold War weapons production and demilitarization.  For the rest of the story of who started cleaning up and how they did it, go to the Arsenal’s site.

While we were at the visitor center at the Arsenal Wildlife Refuge, we saw prairie dogs!  I had never seen one before and we saw close to 100 or more running across the plains.  God’s creations are amazing!  I wish we could have gotten a good picture of live ones close up, but they were too quick for us.

This picture was taken at their museum they have set up.  One day, I am hoping to go back so I can take my kids.  They have tours of the who area and you can see the mule deer and bison roaming on the prairie.  I know they will love seeing this!

I thought I had better split this up into two posts.  It was like we were on a field trip.  I took around 700 pictures and can’t wait to tell you about the trip to Mt. Evans and show you the views from 14,000 ft.

Until then… 🙂

saying yes to the little things..

saying yes to the little things..

My kids.  I love them with all my heart.  Will do most anything for them.  Lately though, I have caught myself saying no to them a lot.  You can tell by the looks on their faces, that hurts them.  This week though, I have tried my best to be more of a yes mom.  I want my kids to remember that I closed my laptop, put my phone down and that they did have my undivided attention.  I only have them a short amount of time and I want I to make the most of it.

So what did we do this week?  My daughter made me some jewelry (with a little help from me).  I now have this awesome red diamond bracelet, as well as a white diamond ring.  And yes, I did wear it all day!

Next, I got a little pampering from my kids.  They begged to paint my fingernails and toenails.  I even got a little lip gloss on my lips.  In fact, they have done this 2 days in a row! (fingernail polish washes off very easily)

Next up was a game of Battleship with my youngest son.  This was a Christmas present that he had asked for.  We have started games before but had never finished one until the other day.  Guess what?  I LOST!!  My 7 year old son beat me!  (N0, I didn’t let him win either!)  I told him we were going to have to have a rematch soon.  I have to redeem myself!  {grin}

Not to be outdone by brother, the Care Bear checker board was brought out.  We had a great match going back and forth, but in the end, I won.  Not by much though!  I only had 2 Care Bears left on the board!

Do you play any board games with your children?  I would love to get some more ideas for games for our family!

Garden Challenge at The Homeschool Village

Garden Challenge at The Homeschool Village

It is once again time to link up with The Homeschool Village’s Garden Challenge.  Growing up, we always had a garden.  It was fun times for me, as I loved watching plants grow and produce wonderful goodies we could eat.  I am so happy that I am now able to pass my love of gardening down to my children.

This year we had a lot planned and time has just gotten away from us.  While we haven’t planted everything that we had wanted to plant, I am thankful we still have a little bit of time to get some vegetables in the ground.  Some of our seedlings have grown, while I let others die by lack of water.

Our tomatoes will be planted this weekend.  I can’t wait to pick our first tomato!

I did manage to get the green bell peppers in a bucket.  However, they do need thinning out.  I need to get a couple of more buckets to put the others in.

Our broccoli came up beautifully.  Then we left on our trip and didn’t pick it when we should have.  By the time we made it back from Denver, it had flowered and was to late to salvage.  So we are going to chopped up the plants and turn in back in the soil, hoping it will rot and help fertilize the other plants.

I am most surprised by our asparagus.  I didn’t think it was going to come up and yet I have 2 that has survived!

Our sunflowers have grown nicely.  I also need to get these in the ground this weekend, too.

What has surprised us the most this year is our herbs!  They are growing like crazy!  My husband has already clipped them back once and dried the herbs out.  We have been using them to cook with, fresh and dried.  The food just seems to taste so much better with home grown herbs.

This is my daughter’s pineapple sage that she choose to grow last year.  We couldn’t believe that it came back up!  We thought it had died during the winter.  We never used it last year, but I have read that we can make some tea from it.  We plan on trying it out this year.

Our rosemary bush has also grown since last year.  I am thankful for a warm winter, because this bush never died back.  It stayed green all winter long. I love to use fresh rosemary when I back a while chicken.  I break off a couple of small pieces and stuff it in the chicken with a lemon or an orange.  It is delicious!

I haven’t put the strawberries in the ground yet and I haven’t planted any cucumbers, squash or okra.  That is on my to-do list this weekend.  Our flowers are also growing.  The roses are blooming and the morning glory, marigolds, daisies and zinnas are all coming up as well.

It seems like our garden has changed a little since I last checked in, but we are making progress with what we have planted.

How is your garden doing?  Have you picked any fruits or vegetables yet?  Be sure to link up with The Homeschool Village and tell us about it!  you just might win a gift!

basketball and cheerleading season come to an end

basketball and cheerleading season come to an end

Our younger children have just recently finished up their first season ever of an organized sport.  They took part in an Upwards Program through a local church in our area.  My older children have been part of organized recreation sports before and I must say I like this organization for this young of an age a lot better.

Upwards Sports helps kids build their athletic skills and self confidence.  My all time favorite about this program is how they incorporate a short devotional and prayer into every practice and game.  They actually make it part of the practice time and game time.

The kids are already talking about the next season and have asked us to coach their team next year. Even though I helped coach my daughter’s cheer team this year, she is wanting to play basketball next year.  My husband and I are looking forward to getting more involved with the program for their next season.   We helped coached our older kids’ teams when they were younger, but then we moved and our son got too old to play sports and our daughter chose dance as her activity.   So we are definitely looking forward to next season!

My daughter is on the bottom left. This is only part of her team with their coach.  Thanks coach Mary!!

My son is on the back row and is #13 on the right side.  Thanks coach Kylee and coach Amy!!

Doing a cheer!

Shooting the ball and he made it!

Do your kids play any organized sports?  If so, do you help coach your child’s team?

“Anything Goes”

“Anything Goes”

My oldest daughter is part of a wonderful dance studio, Triple Threat Performing Arts Academy. This past weekend, the older musical theater group put on the musical “Anything Goes”. My daughter played the part of the Purser. She loved it! She really did an awesome job and we are so proud of her. Music and dance has become a huge part of her life. Nothing like seeing your daughter up on stage performing.

The whole group did an outstanding job on the musical.  We are looking forward to the next one.  Here are a few pictures from the performance.
