Junaluska Memorial and the Trail of Tears – field trip

Junaluska Memorial and the Trail of Tears – field trip

Yesterday, the High School co-op my daughter takes part in went on a field trip to the Junaluska Museum and Memorial. Junaluska was a Cherokee Indian who was who was thought of highly not only by the Cherokee, but the Whites at the time.

We then were taken to a section of the Trail of Tears. All I can say is that it was very humbling. Words can not describe what we heard from the guide. Words and stories that are not mentioned in the History books. What the Cherokee Indians went through and were forced to do. Can you imagine just being forced from your home and told to walk hundreds of miles to a place that you have never heard of much less seen? Losing family members to sickness, starvation and hypothermia. Sometimes a whole family was lost along the trail. Then to listen at how some Indians hid in the mountains from soldiers and how some managed to stay behind and actually make a life.

The pictures tell a little about Junaluska and major events that happened in his life. At the bottom of each monument, it also has the name of a clan from the Cherokee Indians.

The burial site of Junaluska and his wife.

Even though you can’t really see it, this is a section of the Trail of Tears.

The kids are listening to the guide.

If you are ever in the area, be sure to stop by and visit this place. I know you will enjoy it as much as we did.

iFellowship

Today is iFellowship Day! Be sure to stop by Seeds of Faith and see all who have lonked up. be sure to stop by and tell the wonderful bloggers hi!

I have had several people ask how things are going with our newest edition. As you can tell, she is loving it! Not only is Trixie loving it, but so are our kids. They are still arguing over who gets to walk her, feed her and give her the dog bones we bought. I am very happy at how they are all working together and taking responsibility for Trixie.

We are keeping Trixie inside the house and the kids have been doing an excellent job picking up their toys and other belongings out of the floor. They also know that Trixie can’t have any food other than dog food and have been doing a great job of picking up any food that may fall to the floor!

Trixie apparently had been an inside dog at one time because she is already house trained. She has not had one accident since we brought her home on Friday afternoon. When she needs to go outside, she will whine just once or twice and go wait at the door for someone to let her out. She also does not mind being on a leash for walks either.

I really feel like God lead us to Trixie. Even though we have only had her for 4 days, she has already blessed our family so much. The children are working together to help take care of her and even playing together with Trixie. We look forward to having Trixie around with us for a very long time!

Our First Day of School

Our first day of school was a fail.  Yes, I said a fail.  I definitely give myself an F.  My kids on the other hand, I would give an A+!  I woke up not feeling well with a headache.  Add a lot of running around to do and having to bake cookies for church (that never made it to church because I forgot my son didn’t get out of his class until 8pm), dropping books off at 2pm, dance at 5pm, picking husband up from work at 5pm, going to the grocery store to get something for supper (because I forgot it the FIRST time I was there at 8am this morning), then going back to get my daughter from dance, back home to drop kids and hubby off and enough time to walk our wonderful dog before I went back to get my son at 8pm.  Yes, it was a long day.  And I still have the headache.

My kids on the other hand handled everything a lot better than I did!  They were awesome!  They helped mommy pick up the house and walk the dog during the day time.  They helped mommy with the clothes while she baked cookies that they weren’t going to get any of at that time (never made it to church, so the kids were able to have some cookies!).  Then they sat patiently during all of the stops in the afternoon.

So needless to say it didn’t end up like I wanted it to.  I wanted to get pictures of them, I wanted to have Phonics and Math finished by lunch time ad I wanted us to have all of our reading done for the day!

Why do you ask that I would write and say that I failed at school today?  I am human and have bad days just like everyone else.  Tomorrow is a new day and we will begin anew.  I will start the day out with God (which I missed this morning) and know that by starting out with Him and making sure that I make God my first priority, my day will be what He wants to make of it.  He put these kids in my care and trust and has lead us to homeschool them.  So I know that all will be alright by putting God first in our day.

How has your first day of school gone?  Let me know!
