Book Club

Book Club
My oldest daughter takes part in our homeschool group book club. A child will choose a book for the month from a book list. They will then meet once a month to discuss the book. They will also have a project, craft or experiment to do that goes along with the book. The book chosen for this month was “The Sign of the Beaver” by Elizabeth George Speare. They first sat down and talked about the book. What they liked about it, what they didn’t like and if they didn’t like a scene, what would they change it to?

The mom of the child who choose the book this month, had a wonderful idea. She brought items for show and tell that were represented in the book. The first thing she showed the kids was a tooth collection of different animals. Included in the collection were teeth from a bear, a fox, a three-toed horse, a wolf and a beaver. Her husband who is a dentist also had 3 human teeth in the collection as well.

Next, she showed the kids pelts from a beaver, a fox, a rabbit and a raccoon.

This is a basket made from white oak. Her dad made this from the bark of a white oak tree. It is one piece of oak bark that is scored to fold in certain places and it is able to hold water.

My daughter has really enjoyed taking part in the book club. She is looking forward to next year and the list of books that they will be reading. Do you and your kids take part in a book club?

Homeschool Village – Arts

Homeschool Village – Arts

Today at the Homeschool Village, they are talking “Arts”.  We are to tell what all we do or show what we do for arts.

When I got to thinking about art and what we do for art, I was surprised at the list I came up with.  We just happen to be an artsy family after all!

My oldest daughter has been taking dance lessons for the last 2 years.  She is loving every minute of it.

She also loves to create crafts with anything she can get her hands on.  Not only does she love to create different crafts, she loves to draw.  She has many notebooks just filled with sketches that she has created.
This year, with my oldest daughter I have 2 books that we plan on using.   The first one is Discovering Great Artists by MaryAnn F. Kohl and Kim Solga.  The second book is Usborne The Children’s Book of Art by Rosie Dickins.

For my younger 2 children, we will just continue doing small craft projects and drawings.  I will also incorporate the 2 above books with them as well.

We also have a lot of music influence in out house.  My husband and older son play the guitar, electric guitar, upright bass, electric bass and mandolin.  We also have a violin and piano in our house.  I plan on sitting down with the kids and teaching them the basics of the piano.  We are also looking for a violin teacher for our oldest daughter.

I am really excited about what this year will bring in our school.  I know my kids are excited with what we have planned.  What about you?  Do you have an artsy family?  Be sure to check out the Homeschool Village and all the other great blogs talking about art in their families!
